For pendant lighting over a kitchen island, start with 30–36 inches between the countertop and the lowest part of the fitting, roughly 76–91 cm. Include a projecting bulb or ornament if it hangs below the shade. This range appears in Visual Comfort’s island placement guide. It’s a design starting point; the fitting’s instructions, the room and local installation requirements determine the final arrangement.
The measurement becomes more useful when you put it into a kitchen. Consider a 72 by 36 inch island under an 8 foot ceiling, with a 36 inch countertop and stools on one side. We’ll begin with two pendants and try a 34 inch clearance. This hypothetical layout gives us room to explore what happens when the shade, ceiling or island use changes.
Measure the kitchen as it will be used
Measure the finished countertop, including its surface, rather than relying on the cabinet height in a kitchen plan. Then measure vertically to the ceiling at each proposed pendant position. A beam, bulkhead or sloping roof can make those heights different. During a renovation, have the contractor establish the finished ceiling and counter levels before recording the dimensions for the lights.
Put the island’s complete outline on your drawing, including the seating overhang. Label the sink, tap, hob and the areas where you expect to work. A pendant centred on the cabinet carcass may look noticeably off centre above a deep overhang. You can then choose whether the lights follow the whole island or a particular work zone, and make that choice explicit for the installer.
Use the stools you intend to keep. Seat height and posture affect the view underneath a shade, while the space behind an occupied stool changes where people stand during conversation. For a simple mockup, have a helper hold a lightweight paper profile at the proposed height. Give it the actual width and height of the fitting so you can judge the visible obstruction.
Calculate the whole drop before choosing a cord
An 8 foot ceiling is 96 inches above the floor. Subtract the counter height and the desired clearance: 96 − 36 − 34 = 26 inches. That is the total installed drop from the finished ceiling to the pendant’s bottom. It includes the canopy, suspension and complete fixture body. Draw that dimension line beside the whole assembly, and label the space beneath the shade separately as countertop clearance.
A cord length can be mistaken for the overall drop when ordering. With 26 inches of exposed cord and a 7 inch body beneath it, the pendant would already extend 33 inches below the ceiling before adding the canopy. Clearance over our counter would fall to 27 inches or less. A drawing of the whole fitting makes that error easier to catch before anything is installed.
The Orangme Danish Mushroom Pendant Light gives the calculation a real product to work with. Its listing specifies a 23 cm diameter, a 17 cm body height and an adjustable 2 metre hanging wire. The body is about 6.7 inches tall, leaving approximately 19.3 inches within our proposed drop for canopy and suspension together. The supplier’s dimensional drawing, minimum installed drop and adjustment instructions would establish the final arrangement.

The same calculation works entirely in centimetres. For example, a 244 cm mounting height minus a 91 cm countertop height minus an 86 cm clearance leaves 67 cm of total drop. Use one unit throughout your own drawing. Converting each small component separately, then mixing rounded figures with exact ones, creates unnecessary uncertainty.
Let ceiling height change the suspension first
A higher ceiling gives the pendant a longer journey to the same useful position above the counter. The table below keeps our countertop and clearance unchanged to show that relationship. These are arithmetic examples, not prescribed mounting heights.

Look at the balance of shade and suspension in the room, then adjust the trial clearance if that improves the result. Automatically lifting the shade by a fixed amount for every extra foot of ceiling ignores the people underneath it. In a tall kitchen, a longer suspension or a different fixture shape may solve the proportion problem while keeping light close to the work surface.
A low ceiling makes the minimum overall drop especially important. Imagine that only 26 inches are available but a fitting requires 30 inches in its shortest approved configuration. Choosing that fixture would force the bottom lower than planned. A shallower body or another approved mounting style gives you a better starting point than hoping the installer can shorten a component beyond its intended range.
Choose the height for the way the island is used
At a breakfast island, the seated view deserves attention early. Look towards the person opposite, the window and any screen you actually use. For a mixed preparation and dining island, repeat the exercise while standing. A wide shade that feels comfortable above a plate may obstruct conversation when someone is working on the other side.
For food preparation, place an empty chopping board where it normally belongs and observe the light reaching that area. Your body, hands or a tall tap may introduce shadows. The pendant’s beam and the kitchen’s other lights matter here. Raising or lowering an otherwise unsuitable fitting may leave the same awkward shadow across the work surface.
A split level island needs two height measurements. If a raised bar is 42 inches high beside a 36 inch preparation counter, a shade positioned 34 inches above the lower surface is only 28 inches above the bar. That is simply the six inch level difference showing up in the clearance. Decide which surface each pendant serves, then evaluate the other surface and its seated users as part of the same arrangement.
Leave room for normal movements, particularly for a taller person reaching across the island. A smaller shade can preserve an open view without lifting the entire row. Use these observations to choose the height; the 30–36 inch range gives you somewhere sensible to begin the comparison.
Size the shades and their gaps together
For our 72 inch island, try centres at 18 and 54 inches from one end, both halfway across its width. With two 12 inch round shades, this produces 36 inches between centres, 24 inches between shade edges and a 12 inch margin at each island end. These are trial positions with explicit assumptions, so you can redraw them for another diameter.
Kichler’s pendant planning advice suggests roughly 12–24 inches between the widest parts of mini pendants, increasing with pendant diameter. It’s useful to know exactly what the measurement describes. For identical round shades, subtract one diameter from the centre spacing to obtain the clear gap. For unequal shades, subtract half of each diameter instead.
The 23 cm Orangme shade is approximately 9.1 inches wide. At the same trial centres it leaves nearly 27 inches between edges, making the arrangement more open. Compare the full shapes over the counter rather than treating a spacing guideline as a pass or fail test. Also look from the island’s short end: a shade can fit comfortably along its length while feeling too wide across a narrow countertop.
Decide how many pendants the island needs
Count useful lighting areas before counting stools. Four people sitting along one side do not automatically require four pendant lights. Each fixture may illuminate more than one place setting, and the seat positions may change. The more useful question is whether the chosen layout covers the activities along the counter and feels comfortable when those seats are occupied.
For an illustrative 96 inch island with three 12 inch shades, centres at 18, 48 and 78 inches give 30 inch centre spacing, 18 inch clear gaps and 12 inch end margins. That offers a starting drawing for three fittings. Two larger shades or one linear fixture would need their own dimensions and light distribution assessment; simply dividing island length by a fixed number cannot choose between them.
A particularly deep island may have separate preparation and serving areas. A single centre row can look tidy while leaving one working edge poorly lit. Before adding another pendant, review the overall kitchen lighting with a lighting professional. The island lights are part of that larger arrangement, especially when cupboards, extraction equipment or people interrupt the light.
Judge glare with the lights working
Paper shapes reveal the view around a shade; a working sample reveals what happens underneath it. From stool height, a bright bulb may be directly visible through an open bottom. Examine the light source, shade opening and any diffuser as a group. An attractive outline in daylight gives little information about that evening experience.
Bring the countertop finish into the decision too. View a sample of a glossy worktop under the proposed light, and watch for reflections from the places people sit or prepare food. Assess the pendants with the room’s other lights both on and off. That separates a troublesome fitting from an effect that only appears when several sources are operating together.
Dimming can make the island more adaptable, provided the light source and control are compatible. Lutron’s compatibility tool identifies combinations the manufacturer has tested. Have the supplier and electrician establish the appropriate control for the selected fitting. The Orangme product’s adjustable suspension describes height adjustment; dimming compatibility needs separate confirmation.
Account for the ceiling before installation
With a sloped ceiling, each pendant may need a different suspension length to finish with level bottom edges. Measure vertically at every mounting point. Compatibility also depends on the canopy and suspension design. For example, Visual Comfort specifies a maximum slope of 22.5 degrees for its Shanti Grande Pendant. That limit belongs to that model and illustrates why a slope rating must come from the selected fixture’s documentation.
A suspended or lowered ceiling adds another discussion: what will support the fitting, and where can its connections remain accessible? Give the electrician the fixture weight, mounting instructions and proposed positions before the ceiling is closed. They can assess support, the supply and any relevant fire or access requirements. For UK projects, Electrical Safety First recommends using an electrician registered with an approved scheme for home electrical installation work.
Our main example assumes an island without a hob. Above a cooking area, the appliance, extractor and luminaire instructions require separate consideration. For its electric and induction ranges, Bosch’s installation guidance tells owners fitting an overhead vent or microwave to follow that product's specified clearances. A general pendant height recommendation cannot establish a suitable installation over a particular hob. Resolve that location with the installer before buying a decorative fitting for it.
Make the final adjustments deliberately
Once the lights are operating, revisit the activities used in the mockup. Sit with a plate, read something at the counter and stand in the preparation position. If the view feels crowded, compare a small height change, such as one or two inches, where the fixture permits it. That is a practical trial increment, not an installation standard. Arrange any suspension adjustment through the installer according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Change one thing at a time so the result is understandable. Moving the pendant and changing the bulb simultaneously makes it harder to tell which solved the problem. For a matching row, compare bottom edges against the countertop and have the installer resolve any unintended unevenness. On a sloped ceiling, equal visible cord lengths would usually produce different finished heights.
Keep the final drawing with the product instructions. Record the installed drop, countertop clearance and centre positions after adjustments, along with the exact fitting and light source selected. Those details are useful if a shade needs replacing or the kitchen later changes. They also preserve the dimensions that worked in the room instead of leaving someone to reconstruct them from a photograph.
